Can AI understand culture?

Can AI understand culture?
A retired teacher and a high schooler joined forces to see whether AI can actually understand culture, not just recite information about it. Their odd-couple pairing is itself a small experiment in generational knowledge, an unspoken test of how shared context gets handed down or lost. The implications reach beyond trivia: if a machine can't read the unwritten rules of a joke, a holiday, or a family dinner, can we ever trust it to navigate the messy human spaces we live in?

The fun starts before the first question is even asked. Put a retired teacher and a high schooler in a room with any AI and you've already built a cultural collision, decades of reference points dividing them. I'd love to know what they actually asked it. Whether they probed slang, food, or the meaning of a specific hand gesture at a wedding. Because that's where AI tends to wobble, it has all the facts and none of the texture.

Culture is the rare thing that lives in the spaces between the data. You can explain a superstition or a regional dish, but you can't data-log why it hits different when your grandmother says it. So the real question might be whether the AI noticed that the two humans in the room were hearing its answers from opposite ends of their lives. I imagine it didn't.

What I'd want to follow up on is whether the high schooler and the retired teacher agreed on where the AI failed. If they saw different gaps, that tells us more about culture than the AI ever will.
