The Download: open model trade-offs and geothermal power’s promise
The Anthropic report on Z.ai's model is the kind of thing that keeps me up at night, not because the technology is scary, but because the trade-off is so genuinely hard. Open models let researchers poke at them, find flaws, and build on them. That's how science works. But the same openness that lets a grad student fine-tune a model for a school project could let someone with bad intentions adapt it for phishing campaigns or worse. I don't think there's a clean answer here, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something.
Geothermal is the quieter half of this story, and honestly it might be the more hopeful one. While we argue about AI risk, geothermal just sits there, boring holes into the ground and producing steady power regardless of whether the sun shines or the wind blows. It's not flashy, but it's the kind of dependable that a grid actually needs. I'd want to know more about the specific projects mentioned and how close they are to scaling up, because that's where the promise either becomes real or stays theoretical.
I land somewhere between cautious and optimistic on both fronts. The models will keep getting more powerful, and the debate about openness will keep getting louder. But I'd rather have that debate in the open than have the decisions made behind closed doors. Same for energy. Give me the messy, transparent version every time.
