So much for the idea that prestige alone keeps a law firm alive. The image of an AI-native shop circling one of the last great white-shoe names as it falls apart is the kind of moment the whole industry has been nervously waiting for. Automated document review and algorithmic case prediction were supposed to be the back-office threat. Now a firm built on that tech is positioning itself as the buyer of a legacy giant's remains.
I keep coming back to the valuation problem. What is a client list worth when the lawyers attached to it are fleeing out the door? And how do you price decades of institutional know-how when the buyer's whole model runs on not needing said know-how? That's the tension that makes this bid so strange and so watchable. The assets Crosby wants might be exactly the ones its own tech renders obsolete.
My honest take: whether or not this deal closes, the symbolism is already doing its work. The successor to a Wall Street dynasty being an algorithm-driven newcomer says more about the direction of legal services than any merger announcement could. I'd want to know how Crosby plans to keep the remaining partners in the room, because talent flight has a way of turning a clever bid into an empty shell. That part will be the real test of whether this is genius or a costly mirage.
