US GDP grew by 3.4 percent in third quarter amid AI investment boom
Three point four percent is a solid number for a quarter when the Federal Reserve was still leaning on the brakes. The interesting part is what's carrying it. The AI investment boom is showing up in the GDP accounts in a real way, not just in stock prices or earnings calls. Companies are actually spending on data centers, chips, and the power to run them, and that spending is translating into national output.
The consumer side is the other half of the story. People are still opening their wallets even with prices running hot, and that resilience is what keeps the expansion going. I'd want to see the details on how much of that consumer spending is going to services versus goods, and whether the AI investment is concentrated in a handful of firms or spread across the economy.
The risk is that a lot of this growth depends on a couple of big bets. If the AI spending slows down or the consumer finally hits a wall, the third quarter could end up looking like a peak rather than a trend. For now though, the numbers are the numbers, and 3.4 percent beats what most forecasters were expecting this time last year.
