Anthropic expected to receive high ‘junk’ rating from credit agencies following IPO, FT report says
A high junk rating from credit agencies would put a price tag on Anthropic’s ambition. The company has spent enormous sums to build and run frontier models, and its revenue hasn’t come close to keeping pace. After an IPO, that gap becomes a public fact rather than something investors can wave away with a story about future potential.
The interesting part is what the rating says about the market’s patience. Blackstone’s forecast is just a prediction, but it reflects a broader shift. For years, the biggest AI labs have relied on deep-pocketed backers who were willing to fund research without demanding near-term returns. Public markets are a different crowd. They ask harder questions about burn rates and paths to profitability, and a junk rating would make debt financing noticeably more expensive for Anthropic.
I think that pressure could be healthy, even for a company doing serious technical work. It forces a conversation about sustainability that the industry has mostly postponed. I’d want to know how Anthropic plans to close the spending gap, and whether its enterprise business can grow quickly enough to make the rating look overly cautious in a few years.
