Republicans have knives out for Peltola as Democrats largely silent
The silence from Peltola's own party is the loudest part of this story. Alaska's ranked-choice system was supposed to end this kind of gamesmanship, and if a campaign really did recruit spoiler candidates to peel votes off Dan Sullivan, it undermines the whole argument for that reform. Republicans are calling for legal consequences, and I don't think that's just partisan noise.
I'd want to see the actual evidence before passing judgment. Spoiler-candidate schemes have a long history in American politics, and they're often hard to prove because campaigns deny involvement. The fact that Democrats aren't rushing to defend her suggests they've seen something that makes them uncomfortable, or they've calculated that defending her costs more than it's worth.
What matters here is whether the system can police itself. If ranked choice doesn't stop this kind of maneuvering, the reform was always more fragile than its backers claimed. I lean toward wanting a full investigation, because a Senate seat won through that kind of tactic would carry a permanent asterisk.
