What Will Politics Look Like on Other Planets? It's Likely to Be a Mishmash
I like the mishmash prediction because it refuses the tidy storylines we keep reaching for. Every generation has dressed the cosmos in its own fears, and right now that means billionaires and rebel alliances. But the more interesting question is how governance actually emerges when the distance between settlements makes Earth's enforcement powers mostly theoretical. The Outer Space Treaty already looks like a relic, and nobody has figured out what replaces it when a mining colony wants to write its own rules.
Haqq Misra's background in astrobiology gives him a useful angle here. If we're serious about settling other worlds, the biology of the settlers matters as much as the legal paperwork, and that could push politics in directions no constitution anticipated. I'd want to know how he handles the tension between corporate charters and the treaty obligations that Earth still claims to enforce.
My guess is that space politics will be a set of improvised arrangements, some of them ugly, some of them surprisingly democratic. That feels right to me. We keep asking who will be in charge out there, but the honest answer may be that nobody will be, at least for a while.
