Trump says he will respect midterm results ‘if they’re honest elections’
The word "if" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and everyone knows it. Trump didn't say he'll accept the outcome, he attached a condition, and he's the one who gets to decide what "honest" means. That's the part that has Democrats on edge, and it's hard to blame them given how the last cycle played out.
I think it's worth separating two things here. One is whether Trump has a legitimate point about election administration, and there are real debates to be had about voting laws and procedures in various states. The other is the timing and framing. Raising the specter of a rigged election before a single ballot is counted doesn't leave much room for a clean acceptance of results, win or lose. It sets up a scenario where a loss can be dismissed and a win can be celebrated as vindication.
What I'd want to know next is what "honest elections" actually means to him in practice. Is he talking about specific problems he can point to, or is it a standard that only gets defined after the returns come in? That distinction matters a lot for how the next few days unfold.
