Hegseth’s team broke WWII-era globe from Eisenhower’s office
A 30-inch floor globe that once sat in Eisenhower's office is now in pieces. That's a striking image. It's easy to roll your eyes at another Pentagon mishap, but the globe is a piece of living history, and once it's broken, it's broken.
I'd want to know how it happened and what's being done to restore it. The Hill's report says staff lost control while moving it. Accidents happen, but this is the kind of thing that should prompt a review of how artifacts are handled. It also connects to a broader point: the people in charge of institutions are custodians of more than just policy.
I don't think this says anything about Hegseth's fitness for office. It says something about the fragility of the past. I hope museum or preservation experts can repair it. If not, the loss is permanent, and that's worth a moment of regret regardless of your politics.
