Acton responds to Ramaswamy’s ad: ‘It’s despicable’
I keep coming back to the detail that Acton’s own mother is the centerpiece of the ad. Ramaswamy didn’t need to dig up opposition research or twist a vote; he went straight for a family member, and that’s a choice. Acton’s response, that her mother is not well, feels human. Calling the ad despicable is fair because it exploits an illness for political gain.
That said, I’d want to know more about the mother’s exact condition and how the ad was produced. Did Ramaswamy’s team approach her directly, or did she reach out first? The ethics here matter, but so does the factual record. If her mother genuinely believes what she says, that’s one thing. If she’s being used, that’s another. Acton’s team will need to walk a careful line between defending her record and not attacking her own mother.
The bigger picture is that this race just got a lot more personal, and that tends to drive down turnout among independents who are tired of mudslinging. I’d like to see Ramaswamy explain his reasoning, not just double down. For now, Acton’s measured tone probably helps her more than a counterattack would.
