Trump says Norway ‘sucks’ after Nobel loss
The detail that sticks with me is Trump telling the first lady he'd have the Nobel "in two weeks." That level of certainty, before the committee even met, shows he viewed the prize as a guaranteed reward for his administration's diplomacy. The committee saw it differently, and he responded by insulting an entire country.
I get the frustration from his camp. The Abraham Accords were a real diplomatic achievement, and plenty of past winners have gotten the prize for less concrete results. But the Nobel committee has always been quirky and unpredictable, and it's never been swayed by public pressure. Calling Norway "sucks" because its committee picked someone else seems like a reflex.
What I'd want to know next is whether this changes anything for US-Norway relations, which are normally pretty steady, or if it just fades into the noise. My guess is the latter, but the fact that a sitting president talks this way about an allied country is worth sitting with for a moment.
