Google’s Universal Cart shopping tool launches in the US
Google has launched its Universal Cart shopping tool across the US, making it available in both Search and the Gemini app. The rollout signals a push to keep the entire purchase journey inside Google's own surfaces, from product discovery to checkout. By embedding the cart directly into an AI assistant, Google is betting that conversational shopping will become the default way people buy online, and it's positioning itself to own the data and the transaction. It's a logical extension of the company's existing shopping ambitions, though the real test will be whether users actually trust an AI-driven cart enough to abandon their usual retail habits.

The most interesting part of this launch is that Google is putting the cart inside Gemini, not just Search. That tells me the company sees the assistant as the real future of shopping, and the cart is the hook to get people to treat an AI chatbot as a place to actually spend money. It's one thing for Gemini to answer questions, but another entirely for it to hold your basket while you browse.

I'd want to know how the cart handles the messy parts of shopping, like price changes, out-of-stock items, or returns across different retailers. Those are where a universal cart tends to fall apart. Google has the search data to make decent product recommendations, but the hard part is coordination, not discovery.

Still, this is a smart move for Google. Every purchase that starts and ends in its ecosystem means more data and more ad inventory. Whether shoppers adopt it is a separate question, and I suspect the early numbers will be modest until the experience feels genuinely seamless.
