Mediterranean diet may boost tiny proteins that protect the heart and brain
I keep coming back to the name SHMOOSE. It sounds like a cartoon character, yet it's meant to be one of the protective proteins our own mitochondria make. This USC study found that older adults who stuck closely to a Mediterranean diet had higher levels of both humanin and SHMOOSE in their blood. That's a concrete, biological clue rather than another vague "eat better" headline.
What I'd want to know is whether those higher levels actually do the work. The study links the proteins to lower risk of heart disease and dementia, but that link is based on prior work. This particular study only shows a correlation between diet and protein levels. I'd want to see if boosting these proteins through diet actually lowers disease rates over time, not just coincident levels.
Still, it fits a pattern. Mitochondria don't just burn fuel; they signal how stressed or protected a cell is. The idea that a food pattern could dial up protective signals is plausible and worth chasing. I just wouldn't trade my sneakers for an extra glass of olive oil just yet.
