Iran offers to open Strait of Hormuz on several conditions
The timing here is what catches my eye. Iran floats a conditional offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and at the same time Trump is reportedly open to major combat operations after the midterms. That's not a coincidence, and it's not just posturing on one side. Both sides are negotiating with a gun on the table, and the strait is the pressure point that makes the whole thing matter.
I'd want to know what the other conditions are, because the two mentioned, lifting sanctions and releasing billions in frozen assets, are steep asks. The U.S. has used sanctions as leverage for years, and giving that up for a reopening that could always be reversed later is a hard sell. But the strait carries roughly a fifth of global oil traffic, so the economic stakes are real for everyone.
Where I land: this feels like a test of whether either side actually wants a deal or just wants the other to blink first. The midterm timeline adds a domestic political layer that complicates any clean resolution. I'd be watching whether Trump's threat is real or rhetorical, and whether Iran's conditions are negotiable or a wall.
