Don't leave AI to tech bros and oligarchs, UK's AI minister says
I think Narayan's phrasing is worth paying attention to. "Tech bros and oligarchs" is unusually blunt language for a government minister, and it signals that the UK sees a real risk in letting a handful of companies and personalities define how AI develops. The point about building capability and capacity alongside regulation is the more interesting part, though. Regulation alone tends to be reactive, and if the UK only sets rules without investing in its own AI expertise and infrastructure, it ends up as a spectator in a game others are playing.
What I'd want to know next is what "building capability" actually looks like in practice. Does it mean public investment in research, training programmes, or something closer to what other governments have done with national AI strategies? The minister's comments point in a direction, but the details will matter a lot. It's easy to talk about democratising AI, and much harder to fund and execute the work that would make that real.
