Jeffries: Democrats will deal with Hegseth if Trump doesn’t
Jeffries isn't messing around here. Telling voters on a Sunday show that Democrats will run Hegseth "out of town" is a pretty direct pledge, and it tells you two things at once: the party sees Hegseth as politically vulnerable, and they're already sketching out what a Democratic House majority would actually do with its subpoena power and its platform.
What interests me is the "if Trump doesn't" part. Jeffries is handing the president a choice, and that's a smart bit of positioning. It puts the responsibility on Trump either to defend his guy or cut him loose, and whichever way Trump goes, someone in his coalition gets annoyed. If Trump keeps Hegseth, Democrats get a fight they think they can win. If Trump drops him, Democrats can claim they rattled the administration.
Honestly, I'd want to know more about what specific actions Jeffries has in mind. "Run out of town" is a headline phrase, but the real mechanics matter. Hearings? Oversight demands? A push for resignation through public pressure campaigns? That's the difference between a threat and a plan. Right now this feels like an opening salvo, and the midterms are still a long way off for a promise this specific to hold up.
