US to mediate Ukraine-Russia talks in Abu Dhabi next week, Witkoff says
The working-level label tells you a lot. Nobody's booking a summit photo op yet, but neither side is slamming the door. After months of stalled diplomacy and punishing losses on both sides, even a technical meeting in Abu Dhabi counts as movement.
The venue matters too. The Gulf has become the neutral ground of choice for this kind of mediation, and Washington positioning itself as the go-between is a deliberate signal about who sets the agenda. For Ukraine, the worry is always that being mediated by an ally with its own priorities shifts things toward a settlement on Russian terms. For Russia, the concern runs the other way, that American leverage will pressure them into concessions they've ruled out.
I'd want to know who actually shows up and what's on the table. Working-level meetings are where the plumbing gets sorted, prisoner exchanges, humanitarian corridors, technical details, and sometimes that's where real progress hides. But they can also be a way for both sides to look open to peace while the fighting grinds on. The dates are set, so we'll see whether anything concrete emerges or whether this is diplomatic choreography dressed up as breakthrough.
