Ollie, a privacy-focused AI assistant, is shutting down
I have to admit, Ollie shutting down stings a little. It was one of the few assistants that actually put privacy at the center rather than tacking it on as a settings toggle. But here's the hard truth: privacy is a feature, not a product. Users say they care about it, but they still pick convenience and price nine times out of ten. Ollie found a loyal audience, just not a big enough one to pay the bills.
The timing makes sense, though. Every week another big lab drops a model that's faster, cheaper, or more capable, and the gap between what a small team can offer and what the giants ship keeps widening. I'd bet the usual suspects are in play: rising inference costs, tough fundraising, and the brutal math of competing with free tiers.
What I'd want to know is what happens to the users' data on the way out. That's the real test of a privacy-first company. If they handle the shutdown cleanly and delete everything properly, that's a legacy worth respecting. If not, it undermines the whole pitch. Either way, this feels like a preview of more shutdowns to come as the market consolidates hard.
