No agenda, no rush, no leaving San Francisco: Benchmark’s partners on investing in a frenzied market
The image of five Benchmark partners on stage, sounding like friends who happen to run a storied firm, is a useful corrective to how we usually talk about venture capital. Most firms sell urgency, the deal you'll miss, the founder who'll get away, the round that closes tonight. Benchmark's pitch is the opposite: no agenda, no rush, no leaving San Francisco. That posture only works if your track record backs it up, and their history does.
I find the "no leaving San Francisco" part the most telling. Plenty of firms have scattered teams across Austin, Miami, and New York, chasing the narrative that talent dispersed after the pandemic. Benchmark is betting that the densest concentration of technical talent and deal flow still lives in one city, and that showing up in person still matters. It's a bet against the remote-everything thesis.
What I'd want to know is whether this calm reflects genuine conviction or the comfort of a brand that can wait for the best deals to come to it. In a frenzied market, patience is easy to mistake for wisdom. It may be, but I'd like to see how they handle the next down cycle, when the phone stops ringing and the "no rush" stance gets tested. For now, it's a reminder that the most confident firms are often the quietest ones.
