Jennings concerned about multiple states: ‘A lot of bad vibes out there’
Scott Jennings calling Texas a "bad vibe" race is the kind of admission that gets noticed precisely because it's so blunt. For years, the conventional wisdom has been that Texas is safely red, and then Beto O'Rourke came close in 2018 and the margins have stayed tighter than the old assumptions suggest. If a conservative insider is publicly nervous, it tells you the internal polling or the on-the-ground energy is not where the party wants it.
What I'd want to know is which other races he lumped in with Texas, and whether his worry is about candidate quality, fundraising, or just the national mood. There's a difference between a state that's genuinely trending away and one where a weak incumbent or a messy primary is creating an opening. The way he frames it matters too, because a commentator saying this on CNN is partly trying to motivate his own side, not just reporting facts.
I tend to think the Texas Senate race is more interesting as a measure of where the national parties are spending than as a likely flip. Democrats have poured money in before and come up short. But if Republicans are privately nervous about a state they should be able to take for granted, that says something about the broader map. I'll be watching the suburbs more than any single poll.
