The GOP struggles to find a message beyond Trump ahead of elections
The timing here is brutal. An election is hours away and the party's candidates still haven't settled on what they stand for beyond one man. That tells you a lot about how much the brand has been built around Trump, and how little room there's been for anyone to develop their own voice.
I think the corruption and economy angles are where this gets interesting. Voters tend to punish the party in power when prices are high, but if the campaign is all about loyalty rather than answers, it's hard to see how that changes anyone's mind. The report suggests candidates are stuck, and I'd want to know whether any of them have tried to break from the script or whether they're all waiting to see which way the wind blows.
The bigger question for me is what happens after tomorrow, win or lose. If the GOP does poorly, the loyalty-first strategy may get reexamined. If it does well, Trump's grip tightens. Either way, the party's ability to articulate a message beyond one person feels like it's on the ballot too.
