FBI, ICE won’t contribute to poll monitoring: Justice Department
The FBI and ICE sitting out poll monitoring is one line in a court filing, but it tells you a lot about how sensitive the federal role in elections has become. The Justice Department chose the Bureau of Prisons and the ATF instead, and that choice is about optics as much as logistics. FBI and ICE are the agencies that show up in campaign ads and protest signs. Putting them at a polling place would have handed critics a ready-made reason to distrust the process.
This is really a question of public confidence. The midterms will be watched closely, and every decision about who stands inside a polling station gets read as a statement. Keeping the most politically charged agencies away from the ballot box seems like a reasonable call. But I'd want to know more about who is actually going to be there and what training they receive.
The real test is whether voters feel safe and whether the count is credible. That depends less on which badge is on the uniform and more on how the whole system is run. I don't think this filing settles that, but it does suggest the department is paying attention to how its choices look.
