shim-cli

shim-cli
shim-cli is a developer tool that brings some much-needed transparency to AI-assisted coding. It shows you exactly what your coding agent transmits to external services during a session and lets you mask sensitive information before it goes out. As coding assistants like Cursor, Copilot, and Claude Code become standard equipment, developers have had almost zero visibility into what code, context, or credentials get sent on their behalf. This tool turns that invisible data flow into something you can inspect, and then trim down to only what actually needs to travel. For a developer ecosystem that's been flying blind on data privacy, it's a welcome course correction.

I can't help but love the blunt simplicity of this. Every dev I know running Cursor or Copilot has wondered at some point what exactly is going out when they hit send, and most just shrug it off. This tool puts a stoplight on that data pipeline, and the timing is perfect given how fast AI pairing has gone from novelty to default workflow.

The "mask what you can" framing is the honest part. Full redaction is hard, and anyone promising perfect filtering is selling you something. But giving developers a peek at the traffic and some real control over the sensitive parts is a practical first step toward making AI-assisted development something a security team can actually sign off on.

Whether it gets traction comes down to onboarding friction. Devs won't tolerate another config file graveyard, but if shim-cli is lightweight and shows its value in a single demo, I think this could catch on. I'd want to see how it handles the big agents first, because that's where the trust gap is widest.
