Arkane and its Blade game may end up at Ubisoft as Xbox considers offers
I keep coming back to the irony. Microsoft bought ZeniMax in 2021 largely to secure Bethesda's catalog, and now it's shopping one of the most distinctive studios in that portfolio to a publisher that has spent the last decade flattening its own output into a single open-world template. Arkane Lyon made Deathloop and Prey, games built on player agency and systemic design. Ubisoft makes games where you climb a tower and clear a map. The fit is hard to see.
That said, the Blade announcement was a bright spot for Arkane, and the game is still in development. A sale doesn't necessarily kill it, but it does change who answers for it. Ubisoft's own financial troubles are no secret, and it has been cutting staff and canceling projects. Buying a studio with a notoriously slow, iterative development culture seems like an odd bet for a company trying to streamline.
What I'd want to know next is who the other two bidders are. If it's someone like Sony or a deep-pocketed private equity firm, the calculus changes. Either way, this feels like the end of an era for the idea that Xbox would be a home for idiosyncratic single-player studios. The Blade game might land fine, but the studio that made it probably won't be the same.
