Female Texas high schooler cast as male lead in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ files Title IX suit after show canceled
Theater has always been a place where actors play roles that don't match their real-life identities, so a girl playing Seymour isn't unusual in most drama departments. What's unusual here is that the school chose to cancel the entire production rather than let the show go on. That decision, whatever motivated it, turned a routine casting choice into a federal lawsuit.
I think the Title IX argument has real weight. If the district canceled the play because a student's gender didn't match a character's gender in the script, that looks like discrimination on its face. But I'd also want to know what the district says it was actually thinking. Maybe there were concerns about the show's content, or pressure from parents, or something else entirely. The lawsuit will force those details into the open.
Where I land is this: canceling a whole production over one casting decision is a heavy-handed response that punishes every student in the show, not just the one at the center of the dispute. If the district had a problem with the casting, there were lighter-touch ways to address it. Instead, everyone lost the play, and now a court gets to sort out who was right.
