The BoM’s temperature record keeping is under attack – again. What’s going on? | Temperature Check
I keep coming back to the numbers here. Australia has warmed by more than 1.5C since 1910, and that figure rests on the Bureau of Meteorology's long-term record. The framing of this "audit" isn't subtle. It says the data contains "widespread errors," but when you actually check what the Bureau does, how it adjusts for station moves and instrument changes, the claims tend to dissolve. This isn't the first time, and it won't be the last.
What bothers me is that the people behind these efforts rarely engage with the actual science. They throw around the word "audit" like it gives their work legitimacy, but a real audit would have to account for the Bureau's rigorous quality control. The Bureau publishes its methods. Anyone can look at them. These attacks keep resurfacing anyway. I see that as political opposition to the scientific finding. If the temperature record falls, so does a lot of the political pressure to act.
I'd want to see the audit's specific stations and corrections called out in detail. That's what would settle this properly.
