Watch live: Trump officials announce new anti-fraud measures in Minnesota
The lineup alone tells you this is as much political theater as policy. Sending the Treasury secretary, the FBI director, the CMS administrator and the FTC chair to Minnesota for one announcement is a deliberate show of force, and the choice of a swing state is probably not an accident.
That said, going after fraud in federal assistance and healthcare programs is about as close to a consensus issue as Washington gets these days. Both parties say they want to root out waste, and there's real money at stake in Medicare and Medicaid overpayments. The question is what the new measures actually do, and whether they catch genuine fraud without adding hurdles for people who legitimately need help.
I'd want to see the specifics, especially around how the FBI and FTC fit in. Criminal enforcement is one thing, but consumer protection and benefits administration are different worlds. If this is mostly a messaging event, fine, but if it leads to policy changes, the details will matter a lot more than the podium.
