Now you can watch Instagram Reels on your Apple TV
Watching vertical Reels on a big horizontal screen has always felt like a mismatch, but Meta keeps pushing it. The company tested this back in December, then shipped a wave of features in June, and now the app lands on Apple TV. The timing matters because the living room is the one screen where social platforms have struggled to get real traction, and Meta is clearly chasing the same couch time YouTube and even TikTok have been courting on connected TVs.
I land on this being less about convenience and more about ad inventory and attention. A bigger screen means longer sessions and a more engaged viewing mode, which is exactly what Meta needs to sell against Netflix and YouTube's TV ad business. The unknowns for me are format and interaction. How does the app handle vertical video on a 16:9 display, and do live streams on TV actually get meaningful engagement? I'd want to see those numbers before calling it a win. As a viewing habit, it could work if people treat it like background TV, but I'm not convinced Reels can hold a living room's attention the way a show can.
