The Engadget guide to converting a dusty MacBook into a home NAS server is a pragmatic reminder that the most sustainable device is often the one you already own. It walks through leveraging macOS's built-in file sharing or a lightweight OS to create network-attached storage for backups and media, but the analytical takeaway is about trade-offs: a laptop's power draw, battery swelling risk, and limited drive bays make it a compromise versus a dedicated NAS. Still, for users with modest needs—Time Machine backups, media streaming, or a central file drop—it's a low-barrier way to reclaim utility from aging silicon that would otherwise be e-waste.
