How ‘The Traitors’, ‘Lock Upp’ & ‘The Alliance’ Are Driving An Indian Formats Boom
I find the economics detail the most telling bit. When producers say confidence comes from money, they're admitting that creativity follows cash, and that's fine. Streaming platforms in India have created a sandbox where risky unscripted ideas can fail without sinking a broadcaster. That changes the psychology of the whole industry, and you can hear it in the swagger.
I'd want to know which of these shows actually travel. Lock Upp is very Indian in its chaos, its celebrity jail premise, its sheer volume of confrontation. The Traitors is a proven global format, but the Indian version will have to do something different to matter. The interesting question is whether the export boom is about selling formats or selling a sensibility — the loud, emotional, family-dinner-table drama that Indian audiences love.
I think the confidence is deserved, but the real test is whether these shows can be adapted elsewhere without losing their teeth. If Indian producers can bottle that, the formats boom stops being a trend and becomes a genuine cultural export.
