Trump says Iran war will end ‘soon’
There's a strange tension in the president's remarks. Saying the war will end "soon" while openly floating strikes after the midterms doesn't quite add up, unless he means the strikes themselves would bring a quick conclusion. That's a plausible reading, but it's also possible he's managing expectations on multiple fronts, telling voters one thing and showing resolve to Tehran another.
The midterm timing is the detail I keep coming back to. Announcing you'll hold off on military action until after the election is an unusual thing to say out loud. It invites speculation that the decision is political, or that he wants to avoid an October surprise that could shift the campaign. Either way, it makes the national security calculus harder to read.
I'd want to know what military planners are actually recommending and what intelligence supports the idea that strikes would end things quickly. Past experience in the region suggests quick wars have a way of becoming long ones. I'm skeptical of any promise of a fast finish, but I also don't want to dismiss the possibility that the administration has a narrower objective in mind than it's letting on.
