'Crystal Lake' is great, but nothing tops the space horror shenanigans of 'Jason X'
Jason X being called the Citizen Kane of anything is sort of the point. Dropping Voorhees onto a spaceship in 2455 strips away the old-camp gloom and leaves just the absurd collision of a horror icon and a future he has no use for. He doesn't adapt to the tech, he just breaks it.
That's what makes it oddly forward-looking in a way the franchise rarely is. Most slasher revivals play a nostalgia game, circling back to the same murky lake and familiar cabins. Jason X cuts the cord, swaps in a crew armed with plasma rounds and contingency protocols, and lets the sheer inelegance of the monster win. The humor comes from all that shiny future machinery being useless in his presence.
The real test for Crystal Lake is whether it can resist that pull back to the original setting and find some of that orbital energy. I'd want to see a version that takes the space-leaping spirit somewhere genuinely strange again. Until that happens, the 2455 trip stays the benchmark nobody's bested.
