At Cop17, the pressure is on to rescue a deal that could end the destruction of nature
That leopard in Armenia is doing more work than most of the delegates inside the halls. It's a reminder that the stakes in Yerevan aren't abstract targets on paper but living species that don't have time for another round of negotiations. Four years ago the world set itself a clear deadline to halt nature loss by 2030. We're already past the halfway point, and the honest answer is that we're nowhere close.
I keep coming back to the gap between the urgency in the speeches and the pace of real action. Every year these meetings happen, and every year the same commitments get restated with slightly more desperate language. I'd want to know what the holdouts are asking for, and which countries are quietly blocking the harder provisions.
The leopard doesn't care about the politics. It just needs habitat, prey and quiet. I hope the delegates in Yerevan can match its patience with progress, because the clock is running out.
