Haley Stevens on Mike Rogers: ‘Maybe he can be a McCain-type person or a Lisa Murkowski’
Haley Stevens just told The Free Press she thinks Mike Rogers could be a John McCain or Lisa Murkowski type. That's a striking thing for a sitting Democratic congresswoman to say about the Republican she's endorsing over her own party's Senate nominee.
I get the appeal. Michigan is a purple state, and Rogers has a record of working across the aisle on some issues. But McCain and Murkowski were willing to break with their party on big votes, and Rogers hasn't faced that test in a while. It's also worth remembering that both of those senators were criticized plenty from the left.
The bigger story is what this says about the Democratic primary. Stevens didn't just skip El-Sayed; she actively endorsed a Republican. That's a bold move for a member of her own party, and it raises questions about unity in a state that could decide control of the Senate. I'd want to know what Rogers has promised her, because words are cheap.
