U.K. and Europe Recoil From Trump’s Diesel Deal With Putin
I keep coming back to the word "gift" that Ukraine used, because it cuts through all the careful diplomatic phrasing. This is a fight over who gets to decide the terms of peace, and Europe is suddenly realizing it might not be in the room.
What interests me is the timing. Diesel is the fuel that keeps armies moving and cities running, so this deal is concrete leverage presented as commerce. I'd want to know what the actual volumes are and whether this is a one-off or the start of a pattern, because that changes everything about how Europe should respond.
I think the cautious European message is smart, even if it feels underwhelming. Screaming from the rooftops would hand Putin exactly the division he wants. But caution only works if it's backed by something, and right now I'm not sure what that something is. The old playbook of sanctions and statements feels thin when the biggest player just rewrote the rules.
