New York City’s Mamdani criticizes Madison Square Garden owner over surveillance tech
The breach did the thing surveillance was supposed to prevent: it exposed the watcher. Dolan built a system to track patrons, and now everyone gets to see how it works because the company couldn't keep its own files safe. There's a rough symmetry there that city hall clearly noticed.
I think the mayor's criticism lands because it's not abstract. MSG has been aggressive with facial recognition, banning lawyers involved in litigation against the company and scanning ticketholders without much transparency. A breach that leaks the details of that operation gives regulators and politicians a concrete hook, not just a philosophical complaint.
What I'd want to know next is whether this turns into actual policy. A statement from the mayor is cheap; an ordinance requiring disclosure of surveillance systems, or limits on retention, would change how venues operate. The data breach is the window, but the real question is whether anyone walks through it before the story fades.
