Drop-off charges at UK airports to be reviewed after sharp increase
I keep thinking about how the most mundane transactions are the ones that sneak up on us. A few pounds to pull up outside departures used to feel like nothing, and now it's a line item families budget for. The government's review is welcome, but I'd want the numbers on the table: how much these charges have risen, which airports led the charge, and whether the money is going into tarmac or into profit.
The interesting part is that drop-off zones are a choke point. Airports know you can't avoid them, so they price accordingly, and the competition that keeps other prices sane doesn't really exist there. You can't shop around for a different curb.
I'd like to see the review dig into whether these fees push people into riskier behavior, like stopping on the hard shoulder or circling the roundabout for the tenth time to dodge the charge. If the goal is fairness, that's the real test. I'm hopeful, but I'll believe it when the report lands.
