Researchers Find Widespread PFAs Contamination in Florida Waterways
96 percent of the waterways tested came back with PFAS in them. That number is hard to sit with, especially when you remember these chemicals don't break down. Finding 43 different kinds in Florida streams tells me these compounds have been accumulating for decades from countless sources. The scale of the problem is systemic.
What bothers me is what the report doesn't fully answer. We still need to know how much of this comes from firefighting foam at military bases, how much from industrial runoff, and how much from everyday products we flush down the drain. Florida's groundwater feeds drinking wells for millions of people, and if the surface water is this loaded, the aquifers can't be far behind.
I'd want the next step to be a real cleanup plan with money attached, not just more studies. We've known PFAS are dangerous for years, and federal limits are still catching up to the science. Every season of delay is another season of these compounds settling into fish, into soil, into us.
