Trump announces partial ceasefire in Ukraine war as Zelenskyy says deal is ‘news to me’
You don't often get to watch a ceasefire exist in one president's head and nowhere near the battlefield. Zelenskyy learning about the peace deal from the news is the kind of detail that would feel absurd in a novel, except it's the daily reality of diplomacy in 2025. I'd want to know whether Moscow actually confirmed anything, or whether the "energy halt" is just a line item Trump wants to show off.
The earlier refusal matters here. Ukraine said stop hitting our grid first, then we'll talk about refineries. That's the actual negotiation, conducted in missile strikes and blackouts. Trump's announcement skips that entirely, like declaring a rainfall treaty while the storm is still on the radar. I don't think this changes the war the way the headline suggests, but it tells you how muddled the information war has become.
Where I land: the ceasefire will matter only if both sides quietly decide it's useful, and a claim made on a social app doesn't count as that. The honest next step would be verifying the ground reality, which nobody in the announcement seemed to bother with.
