Kalshi expands protections for users aged 18-20
I'm curious what the "special accounts" actually contain beyond the deposit cap, because that's where the real test lies. A deposit limit is straightforward and easy to enforce, but if the extra protections are just notification banners and a support line, the headline sounds better than the reality. Still, Kalshi deserves some credit for treating 18-to-20-year-olds differently from full adults, even if the line between "too young to risk your own money" and "old enough to vote and sign contracts" is inherently blurry.
The interesting tension here is that prediction markets advertise themselves as information-gathering tools, not betting sites. Yet a young trader losing $2,500 a month on election odds feels a lot closer to gambling than to market research, no matter how you dress it up. I'd want to know whether this cap actually changes behavior or just shifts deposits elsewhere, and whether Kalshi plans to publish data on how these accounts perform compared to older traders.
I land somewhere in the middle. Protecting young users from downside risk is sensible, especially when the product sits in a regulatory gray zone. But a monthly deposit limit stops at the point of entry, and it does nothing about the person who wins early and chases bigger positions, or the one who quietly resubscribes after a reset. The cap is a good start; it's just not the whole answer.
