Comey reacts to new charges: ‘Funny’ if it weren’t ‘appalling abuse’ of DOJ
I keep coming back to that phrase "nothing's changed with me." Comey is essentially saying he's the same man he was when he ran the FBI, and that the accusations against him are recycled versions of old grievances. That framing is smart, because it forces you to ask whether these charges are genuinely new or just a retread dressed up in legal language.
What I'd want to know is the substance of the charges themselves. Comey's video gives us his reaction, but not the specifics of what the DOJ is alleging. Without that, we're left with two competing narratives: one side sees a veteran law enforcement official being hounded for political reasons, the other sees accountability finally catching up with someone who overstepped. Both stories are plausible, and the details will decide which one holds up.
The deeper issue is how accustomed we've become to watching the justice system get pulled into political fights. Comey's warning about numbness is worth taking seriously, regardless of where you stand on his case. When the public starts shrugging at allegations of prosecutorial abuse, something important has eroded.
