Just defeating Trump ‘Ain’t good enough,’ says Sanders, ‘We have to go further’
Opposition is the easy part. Any party can coast on the other side's collapse, and Democrats have the wind at their backs with Trump's numbers where they are. Sanders is asking something harder: what happens when the landslide lands? I think he's right that the midterms are a referendum, but a referendum only tells you the temperature, it doesn't tell you what to cook.
The interesting wrinkle is that Sanders has been saying variants of this for years, and the party keeps treating it as a wedge issue rather than a plan. His point about the working class has a strange kind of physics to it. Momentum is real in politics, but it decays without fuel. If Democrats win big and then sit still, the cycle just starts over.
I'd want to know what specific agenda he has in mind beyond the slogan. Opposition speaks to fear; an agenda speaks to hope, and hope is a much harder substance to manufacture. The polls may look good now, but the political weather can turn in a single news cycle.
