Researchers warned of North Korean hacking tactics years before record $6.3B Binance heist
The uncomfortable part of this story is that nobody can claim surprise. Researchers had been spelling out North Korea's playbook for years, the patient social engineering, the fake job offers, the slow infiltration of developer tools, and yet Binance still ended up on the wrong side of a $6.3 billion loss. That gap between what security teams know and what they actually harden against keeps showing up across the industry.
I'd want to know which specific warnings were on the table and whether Binance acted on any of them. If the researchers flagged the exact techniques and the exchange shrugged, that's a governance failure, not a technical one. If the tactics evolved just enough to slip past, that's a different conversation about how fast these groups adapt.
Either way, the takeaway for me is that crypto exchanges treat security like a compliance checkbox when the threat model is an adversarial nation state with infinite patience. The warnings were there. The question is why they weren't enough.
