J.K. Rowling To Be Subject Of BBC Documentary Examining Her Rise & Gender Identity Views
The BBC has tapped Rogan Productions, the people behind Grenfell: Uncovered, to make this. That tells me they're aiming for hard truths, not a tribute. Rowling's story has the shape of a myth: a single mother in Edinburgh scribbling in cafes, then a billion-dollar empire. But the second half of her public life has turned into something messier, and the documentary's title alone, just her name, feels loaded.
I think the most interesting question is whether a documentary can hold two truths at once: that she wrote Harry Potter, a series that gave millions of outsiders a home, and that her views on gender have hurt a lot of trans people. I'd want to know how the filmmakers weigh those. Are they going to give her a platform to explain, or are they going to let critics respond? The working title suggests they're treating her as a subject of history, not a friend.
I land somewhere uneasy. We keep trying to sort public figures into heroes and villains, and Rowling resists both boxes. Whatever the BBC produces, it won't settle anything. But a careful look at how a beloved author becomes a lightning rod might tell us more about our own moment than about her. I'd watch for that.
