'The X-Files' is officially returning as Hulu picks up Ryan Coogler's 'reimagining' of the sci-fi icon
The long-shuttered division for unexplained phenomena is the detail that hooks me. Not the X-Files as we knew it, but a closed case file being reopened by new agents who have to figure out what the old ones meant. Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel are strong, grounded picks for that kind of work. The show always worked best when the monsters were symptoms of something human, and Coogler has a feel for that.
The fact that Chris Carter is producing suggests some continuity, but the door left open for Mulder and Scully to walk back through worries me a little. A reimagining should stand on its own. Every cameo risks turning the new story into an episode of legacy nostalgia. I'd rather see Coogler's agents inherit the premise and make it theirs, with the old cases as mythology they have to interrogate.
I don't know if this will land, but I'm glad it's being attempted. The X-Files always asked what we're willing to believe and who we trust to tell us. That question hasn't gone away. A new team asking it in a changed world feels right.
