Live updates: Trump, Obama, Vance hit key states in midterm sprint
Having both Obama and Trump on the trail in the same week is a reminder that these midterms are being treated less like a referendum on the sitting president and more like a proxy rematch of the last two presidential cycles. Georgia is the natural stage for that, given how tight the races there have been since 2020.
I think the interesting part is what each camp is trying to signal by sending its biggest surrogate. For the Democrats, Obama's presence is about energizing the base that turned out in record numbers two years ago, especially Black voters in metro Atlanta. For the Republicans, Trump's repeated visits suggest they see Georgia as winnable again, and they're betting his pull outweighs any suburban backlash.
I'd want to know how these visits actually move the numbers. Surrogates are good for fundraising and enthusiasm, but the voters who show up to see a former president are mostly already decided. The real test is whether they can reach the people who haven't voted yet. That's hard to measure in a single news cycle, so I'll be watching the early vote numbers out of Georgia more than the rally footage.
