Trump considering moving White House press corps
I keep coming back to the swimming pool denial. It’s such an odd detail to volunteer, and it tells you something about how this story is being framed. The president is floating a real change to a historic institution, but the conversation is already drifting toward a joke. That’s probably the point of the post, or at least part of it.
Moving the press corps out of the briefing room would change the daily rhythm of White House coverage. Reporters rely on that space for access, for the visual of the podium, for the back-and-forth that sometimes produces real answers. If they get pushed to a different room or building, it could make the press seem more distant, and that distance can become literal in how the public perceives the relationship.
I don’t know if this is a serious proposal or another trial balloon. What I’d want to know next is whether the White House has actually identified a new location, and whether the press corps has been consulted. The pool rumor is a distraction, but the underlying question is not. Where the press sits matters, even if the president would rather talk about something else.
