Second Labour MP suspended over Covid loan repayments
The voluntary referral is the part I keep coming back to. Perran Moon walked himself into the investigation rather than waiting to be pulled in, and that reads differently from a forced suspension. It suggests either a genuine desire to clear the air or a recognition that the story was going to come out anyway, and better to be seen cooperating.
This is the second Labour MP in the same boat, which tells you the party has a problem it can't wave away. Covid loans were a lifeline for thousands of small businesses, and the public is rightly sensitive about anyone who took that money and didn't play by the rules. The standards process will do its work, but the reputational cost lands before the verdict does.
What I'd want to know is the shape of the loan and the repayment timeline. There's a wide gap between a paperwork slip and something more deliberate, and the suspension alone doesn't tell us which side of that line this falls on. For now, the honest position is to wait for the investigation to finish and judge it on what it finds.
