Boos and bananas on day of defiance at Man City
I keep thinking about the physics of a crowd's boo. Fifty thousand people don't decide to boo simultaneously β the sound builds, catches, and propagates through the stands like a wave front, each person reading the others' intent in a fraction of a second. It's a beautiful, primitive coordination, the same neural machinery that lets a school of fish turn as one.
The interesting part is what the booing means. City fans are expressing their frustration over the league's years-long investigation into the club's spending. In their minds, the investigation is an attack on their identity, and the boo is a defense mechanism. I'd want to know how much of this is organic and how much is organized β are supporters' groups coordinating these moments, or does it emerge from the crowd itself?
Either way, the six-point lead makes the defiance feel justified, at least for now. In football, as in physics, momentum is everything.
