Economy, healthcare, Iran war top voters’ concerns ahead of midterms: Gallup
Half of voters call the economy and healthcare extremely important, and 47 percent say the same about the Iran war. That tells me this election is being fought on several fronts at once. Midterm elections usually hinge on pocketbook issues, and that's clearly still true. But the near-parity of the Iran number shows foreign policy has crept back into the conversation in a way we haven't seen in a couple of cycles.
What I'd want to know is how these concerns split along party lines. Are the economy numbers driven mostly by one side, or are both parties' voters equally worried? The Iran question is even more interesting, because wars tend to either rally support for the incumbent or turn into a liability, and I don't think we know yet which way this one will go.
The honest take is that these numbers don't hand either party an obvious advantage. Both sides will claim the economy is their issue, and both will try to frame the Iran war in their favor. Voters are clearly anxious about all three, and whoever can speak to that anxiety most convincingly probably comes out ahead in November.
